The Future Of Blood Sugar Monitoring

Since the explosion of wearable devices, we can now wear devices that track our heart rate, breathing, sleep, mood, movement, and many more. But the one thing that’s missing from this list is glucose, and it seems odd that we’re obsessed with measuring anything that changes in our body, except glucose, something which changes throughout the day and has a huge influence on our health.

Any individual with diabetes could probably tell you why in one guess… who would want to prick their finger for blood unless they really needed to? That’s because a wearable device that accurately tracks blood glucose doesn’t exist yet, but if it did then it would be of huge use to not just people who have diabetes, but also the rest of us who just want to do what we can to protect our health.

Glucovation haven’t done exactly that, but they’ve come closer than anybody else so far. They’re still in the process of bring their product, the SugarSenz, to market, but there’s much hype about it already.

The SugarSenz comprises of a wearable sensor which wirelessly connects to a smart watch or smart phone. The small sensor is attached to a part of the body like the abdomen with an adhesive patch, and a small needle penetrates through the skin to continuously monitor blood glucose (similar to the needle of an insulin pump). You just need to replace the sensor every 7 days.

This means you can then go about your daily life, receiving information about your glucose without having to prick your finger every time you want to know. How does your glucose change after your favourite meal? How about at the gym? Is it stable? Is it likely to cause you any health problems? These are all questions you can answer with the SugarSenz.

This is also great for people already with diabetes, where high levels are known to increase the risk of complications like heart disease, loss of vision, and amputation.

When it arrives, the SugarSenz is going to appeal to a wide variety of people, from those with diabetes, to athletes, and to the health conscious.
