You are a Product of your Own Environment- Utilising Social Media as a Tool for Change

With the eruption of social media platforms in the 20th century, more and more of the population are moving towards sharing of files and information using sites such as Facebook and Twitter to communicate and ‘hang out’.

I believe that almost everything in your day to day life can be adapted and optimised in order to give some form of benefit. Speaking to your hairdresser helps relieve stress, taking out the bins can increase daily physical activity, falling out with your partner can subsequently lead to a strengthening of emotional connections. Social media is of no exception to this rule. It doesn’t have to be a platform for the younger generation to waste time, it can be of huge benefit to your health and well-being related goals.

With this in mind, here are my top 5 tips for using social media to help you be even more awesome (you’re reading our blogs so you’re almost certainly pretty awesome already).

A Word of Warning

Although the information shared on social media can be hugely beneficial it can also be equally as detrimental. Before connecting with others be sure to research credentials and the quality of their information and media.

Under no circumstance should you go against doctors recommendations regarding any protocols you are currently undertaking and before putting any advice into practice you should first seek the guidance of a medical practitioner.

1.      Educate

Most using social media ‘follow’, ‘like’ and ‘connect’ with celebrities, comedians and like-minded individuals. Recognising that social media is simply a platform for sharing information and experiences to others, the educational benefit is huge, you just need to connect with the right people.

If you’re looking to increase physical activity, follow trainers and health coaches sharing information regarding exercise modality and tips to increase participation.

2.      Motivate

Motivation is a barrier for most of the population undergoing a lifestyle change, it can be hard but it doesn’t have to be.

Increasing motivation doesn’t mean that you have to engage with corny generic quotes (that doesn’t mean you don’t have to). Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals looking to make a change for the better can be equally as effective.

Don’t forget to share your journey with others, by undertaking a change you’ll be surprised by how many people you can inspire.

3.      Be Accountable

One thing that New Year’s resolutions demonstrate is the lack of will power and accountability associated with a promise to one’s self. It’s easily forgotten and even easier to make excuses.

Social media is a fantastic way to spread your goals and plans, in doing so you’ll be reminding those close to you that you are embarking on a challenge that may need support. With a bit of luck they won’t let you forget or give up, and will therefore increase your chances of achieving your goals.

4.      Be Social

Spending time on social media platforms is certainly not a waste of time in my opinion. Many sceptics argue that social media has negative implications on human interaction, I’d argue the opposite, if your time is well managed.

With improvements in modern technology it is even easier to keep in touch with those who may be far away or who you rarely get the chance to meet up with. Use the platforms to keep in touch, anybody who knows anything about health and well-being understands the importance of social interaction and relationships, so take this opportunity to enhance yours.

5.      Remember

Articles, conversations, videos and photographs can all be shared and stored through most social media platforms allowing you to revisit or remind others later down the line.

Looking back through my personal memories can improve mood and relieves stress having numerous health benefits. Procrastination doesn’t have to reduce productivity. I tend to take a more holistic approach towards health and fitness, if going through old Facebook photos or funny tweets makes you happy and more relaxed, I see that as a huge positive.

So there you have it, five ways to turn procrastination into something great that makes you even more awesome.

I hope it helps.
