Measuring Body Temperature Without Putting Anything In Your Mouth (Or Anywhere Else!)

The impracticality of body temperature measuring goes beyond an annoying thermometer in your mouth. For practitioners and other individuals, measuring body temperature can be a real pain, especially in young children.

German device maker Medisana are working to further develop a device that attaches to your iPhone or iPad that measures body temperature without even having to touch your skin.

The device works using advanced infrared technology, which when pointed at the temporal artery feeds back results within 0.2-0.3 Degrees Celsius through a user friendly app named VitalDoc which can be downloaded through the Apple store.

Implications of such a technology are obvious with less awkward monitoring, less risk of bacterial infection, easier application to otherwise awkward settings involving young children, and a reduction in human error. The ThermoDock technology may allow more consistent and easy temperature tracking for practitioners and patients alike.

Although still waiting for FDA approval the technology is on sale in Europe and can be purchased for £39.40 with the app completely free.

Clinical research is still ongoing but initial data appears positive and you can be expecting the application of the ThermoDock to become more wide spread in years to come.
