The rise of wearable tech like activity trackers can help us to track not only our activity, but also our sleep too. With a growing ability to track every aspect of our life, Withings has developed the Aura smart sleep system which doesn’t have to be worn by the user at all.
Launching this spring, the system comprised of a bedside device, mobile application and sleep sensor integrates to monitor, analyse and ultimately improve sleep.
The bedside device records the sleep environment, including noise pollution, room temperature and light levels. If there’s something in the environment that could disturbing sleep then it will be correlated with the data of the sleep sensor.
The device also gives off light and sound which is programed to adapt to the users body clock and help to positively impact the environment you sleep in. Its multi-colour LED dimming light technology looks to enhance lighting wavelengths and the secretion of melatonin, which is responsible for the sleep-wake cycle. The sounds emitted replicate the circadian rhythms frequency and pattern to help you relax when falling asleep.
The mobile app allows users to visualise their sleep cycles, compare nights and understand what wakes them up. The app also gives the user control over personalised wake up and fall asleep programs. It also integrates with a number of other apps too.
The sleep sensor fits under the user’s mattress to monitor sleep pattern and cycles including body movements, breathing cycles and heart rate. Pretty impressive for a piece of technology that slips under a mattress. All of this data is then wirelessly fed back to the app.
The only thing that might give you a restless night here is the cost of the product, at around £180, but for avid trackers or the sleep deprived it’s probably well worth it for a better night’s sleep.
